SUMMARY:MILITARY BRATS: Art about the Military
DESCRIPTION:MILITARY BRATS: Art about the Military Child Experience\n\nOPE
N CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS\n\nA juried exhibition in support of the Workhouse
Military in the Arts Initiative\n\nNo one knows where the term “militar
y brat” exactly originated\, but some believe it was an early 1920s refe
rence to the British army’s use of the acronym\, “BRAT” as the statu
s of “British Regiment Attached Traveler”\, a term applied to families
who would travel with the soldier. The WMAI invites all children of activ
e duty or\nretired service members\, veterans and reservists (ages 5+) to
submit a single artwork. The exhibition features work representing militar
y children\, affectionately known as “military brats\,” a badge of hon
or that describes life in a military family—multiple moves\, new beginni
ngs\, stressors\, deployments—an overall culturally unique experience di
ffering from civilian life as expressed through original artwork in variou
s art media\, materials and processes.\n\nWMAI would like to provide insig
ht into the lives of military children by opening the conversation about w
ho they are and have become because of their military childhood. The purpo
se of the show is to create a space for expression and reflection for mili
tary children while sharing and engaging with the campus and larger commun
ity. A short bio will be included with the artwork highlighting the child
’s military and artistic background. We open this exhibition during the
month of April\, Military Child Month and National Military Brats Day (Apr
il 30) to raise awareness about the ongoing sacrifices and service militar
y children contribute to society and the artistic community.\n\nDeadline t
o submit is March 22\, 2019\, click the link below for a submission form a
nd complete guidelines!\nCLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD PROSPECTUS
